Trigger Point Therapy
New Roads Chiropractic Center’s Use of Trigger Point Therapy
“Oh, that’s the spot, Doc!”
Many patients are surprised that we can locate the exact painful spot simply by touch. These sensitive areas—called trigger points—are irritable spots in tight muscle bands. They provoke pain responses and are felt as tight or hard nodules beneath the surface.
Trigger points aren’t just tender areas. They affect surrounding muscle tissues and can cause pain in seemingly unrelated areas of the body.
What Is Trigger Point Therapy?
This form of soft tissue therapy was pioneered by Dr. Janet Travell, who famously treated President John F. Kennedy for chronic back pain. The core theory is that pain felt in one part of the body can actually originate from injury or dysfunction in another.
At New Roads Chiropractic Center, we integrate trigger point therapy with chiropractic care—especially for spinal nerve-related dysfunctions—to help you recover more fully and quickly.
How It Works
Trigger point therapy involves applying pressure to painful muscle knots to release tension, improve function, and relieve pain. The pressure can sometimes intensify the discomfort for a moment but often brings immediate and lasting relief.
- Active trigger points cause direct muscle pain and can radiate pain to other areas.
- Latent trigger points don’t hurt unless pressed, but may contribute to stiffness and reduced range of motion over time.
This therapy is sometimes combined with massage, depending on your needs. When used alongside chiropractic adjustments—like the Cox® Technic—it can dramatically speed up recovery.
