Spinal Manipulation for Acute
Back Pain
The Journal of the American Medical Association
(JAMA) printed a review study of randomized clinical trials –
high level research studies – about
spinal manipulation for relief of acute
back pain (back pain up to 6 weeks in duration). This review finds
that spinal manipulation offers modest improvement in
pain and function with no serious adverse effects.
(2)
JAMA also published an editorial by the prominent
medical doctor and author, Richard Deyo, MD, about spinal manipulation for back
pain incorporating Paige’s study. The editorial explains
that spinal manipulation treatment for acute
low back pain is appropriate.
Its use is in line with the American College of Physicians review and
subsequent guideline. Spinal manipulation allows modest
improvement in pain and function in the short-term compared
with sham manipulation, usual care and other treatments. And of note, Deyo points
out that, of the trials reviewed by Paige et al and
the American College of Physicians, none suggested that spinal manipulation care
was less effective than conventional medical care (drugs, rest, etc.). SMT
proved equal to or better than conventional care.
